Festivals and tradition

The festivals held in Debabarrena are linked to tradition. The lively atmosphere of its streets is intensified during the patron saint celebrations.

Bullfights and bull running, drumming festivals, rowing contests, rural sports and traditional dance shows are some of the folkloristic displays which will delight the visitor as much as the locals.

Cosme Damián Txurruka

El brigadier Cosme Damián de Churruca, hero of the sea battle of Trafalgar against the English fleet of Nelson, was born in Mutriku and he was burled in his parish church.

His palace-house and that of his descendants the Counts of Motrico, can be seen in the historical centre of this village.

This house was built by Antonio de Gaztañeta, who, apart from being a great seaman, was the most important scholar in the art of naval construction in the world during the XVIIth century.
